If you buy John Lennon's observation that the Rolling Stones were apt to copy the Beatles' innovations within a few months or so, "Y'all Tin't E'er Get What You Want" is the Rolling Stones' counterpart to "Hey Jude." Both songs last about vii minutes, an almost unheard of length for a pop tune used on a single (although "You Can't Always Get What Yous Want" was simply a B-side, to "Honky Tonk Women"). Both songs swell from simple beginnings to orchestral crescendos; both use choral bankroll vocals; and both take very long, gradual fadeouts that repeat a cardinal musical motif of the composition. "You lot Can't Always Go What You Want" is not a mere "Hey Jude" fake, however, being quite worthy, even archetype, in its ain right. The real daze was the opening verse, sung unaccompanied by the London Bach Choir -- information technology sounds like a direct classical recording, non a stone i, let alone a Rolling Stones 1. The classical mood is continued past the stately piano and brief, sad French horn solo (played past Al Kooper) on the post-obit instrumental department. Mick Jagger sings the get-go poetry without drums; up to this point, the song is a carol. When he gets to the terminate of the chorus, though, the piano becomes more forceful, the drums and bankroll voices kick in, an organ comes along, and the song changes into a mid-tempo rock number. As 1960s Rolling Stones originals become, at that place'due south not much, not any really, blues involved. It's a classy pop tune, actually, with some folk (especially in the guitar strum), gospel (especially in the singalong chorus vocals), and classical elements. Information technology sounds inspirational, despite the somewhat downcast subject matter; and had information technology been released equally an A-side, it would have stood a hazard of being a substantial hitting. Much has been made of the lyrics reflecting the stop of the overlong party that was the 1960s, equally a snapshot of Swinging London called-for out. That's a valid estimation, but it should also exist pointed out that there's also an uplifting and reassuring quality to the melody and performance. This is especially true of the key lyrical hook, when nosotros are reminded that nosotros can't always go what we want, simply we'll get what we need. It's a philosophical rumination, such every bit the ane the Beatles offered around the same time (in "The Cease") nearly the beloved you lot brand being equal to the honey you take, that'due south simple just enduring. Every bit with "Hey Jude," "You Can't Always Get What You Want"'southward endless fade manages to be hypnotic rather than ho-hum, equally the London Bach Choir reenters and the organ improvises nicely, adding an appropriate varnish of grandeur to a dandy vocal and performance.
